We, the residents and visitors of Lambeth, are calling on Lambeth Council to make keeping our streets clean a much higher priority.

Across the borough, residents are increasingly reporting overflowing bins, litter-strewn streets, dirty pavements, fly-tipping and growing concerns about rats. Every week, we receive photos and messages from people asking why these issues are becoming more common and why they often remain unresolved for weeks or even months.

This petition is not about politics. We don't care whether the responsibility lies with Lambeth Council, its contractors or businesses that fail to dispose of waste properly. Residents shouldn't have to work out who's responsible.

What matters is the result.

We all pay council tax, and in return we believe every resident should be able to expect the basic standards of a well-maintained borough.

We are asking Lambeth Council to:

Install enough public litter bins in busy locations across the borough.
Empty bins frequently enough to prevent them from overflowing.
Increase the regular cleaning of streets and pavements.
Remove fly-tipping more quickly.
Improve enforcement against businesses and individuals who illegally dump waste or leave rubbish on public streets.
Take stronger action to reduce the increasing problem of rats caused by overflowing rubbish.
This is not an unreasonable request.

Clean streets, clean pavements and well-maintained public spaces are among the most basic services residents should expect from their local council. Lambeth is an incredible borough, home to thriving communities, independent businesses and some of London's most-loved parks and neighbourhoods.

It deserves to look its best.
