The Issue

Representative Jay Obernolte recently sent an email to his constituents highlighting Jackie and Shadow’s new eaglets. In the email, Obernolte stated, “These iconic bald eagles continue to inspire folks across our region and remind us of the importance of protecting our wildlife and natural habitats for generations to come.”

However, Jackie and Shadow’s natural habitat is currently under threat. A proposed development known as Moon Camp will put a number of luxury homes and a marina parking lot in their primary foraging area. The construction and resulting disruption to the area will cause a significant detrimental impact to the environment not just for the eagles but for other wildlife and plant life as well. According to www.savemooncamp.org, this development is likely to drive Jackie and Shadow from the area.

Big Bear residents contacted Obernolte asking him to take action to protect Jackie and Shadow. He responded that one of his top priorities is “preserving our natural resources and the incredible wildlife that inhabits them,” and that he will “keep [our] thoughts in mind should any legislation regarding animal rights come before the full House for a vote.” However, he did not even mention the eagles in his response.

The San Bernardino Mountain Land Trust needs to raise $10 million to purchase Moon Camp and permanently preserve the area for wildlife. Obernolte is ranked among the wealthiest members of Congress. He flies his private jet to his mansion in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Big Bear Lake. He claims to care about wildlife and nature conservation, but he has not taken any action to protect the world-famous Bald Eagles in his own hometown.

We call on Representative Jay Obernolte to keep his promise to protect wildlife by helping the San Bernardino Mountain Land Trust save Big Bear's Bald Eagle Habitat.
