Save Marcus Garvey Library in Tottenham from cuts and downgrade
The Friends of Marcus Garvey Library are stil looking for a PRO BONO LAWYER to help us to stop the Council's plans.
YOUR LAST CHANCE TO OBJECT TO FUSION LIFESTYLES PLANNING APPLICATION FOR NEW DOOR AT MARCUS GARVEY LIBRARY
The planning application is here:
The path leading to the door and associated ramp, will cut through the children’s garden, reducing it in size, so we will lose an important green amenity in a very built-up part of Tottenham; but the door will also result in serious safeguarding issues for children as under the Council’s plans it is intended to form the beginning of a busy thorough-fare going right by the children’s library and through the rest of the ground floor.
We already have 39 online objections. We can make it over fifty!!!! If you have not submitted an objection do so as soon as possible and tell everyone you know or who would be affected to also object.
Letters have been sent out on behalf of the friend’s group to councillors asking that the decision about the door be submitted to a full planning committee so that the community can voice their concerns, but you can also contact your local councillors to get them to take the loss of a local amenity and the safety and security issues seriously.

Don't hesitate to react to Council Leader Claire Kober, Cabinet Member Jason Arthur and Cabinet Advisor on Libraries Adam Jogee on twitter @ClaireKober @Jason_Arthur @ AJogee and remind them that:
- books relevant for the community have been sold off cheaply
- library users will be locked out for 6-8 months without alternative provision
- the library space will be greatly reduced
- the dedicated youth and exhibition space is lost
- the library will be crossed by heavy people traffic towards the Council office
- IT improvements will not happen until 2017!
- the library garden is lost to the new main entrance

culture is like a tree without roots.”
We love Tottenham's Marcus Garvey library. We need it too. But the library is now at risk from severe cuts and reorganisation.
If you visit our library, in the children's library, you will find children and their carers doing messy play. In the young adult room you will find teenagers doing their homework. Upstairs in the adult library you will find the study desks full. You will find librarians advising someone where the best business start up book is and community groups using the meeting room. All in a safe, quiet space under the guidance of dedicated staff.
After the riots the government made a commitment to support the regeneration of tottenham. Haringey council has said they are committed to helping children have the best start in life and to improving library facilities. Marcus Garvey Library is the main library in Tottenham. The community uses it and needs it. But the library is at risk of being significantly cut: experienced staff being lost, activities being cancelled, building space being halved and stock being sent away, study desks being removed, children's library shrinking by 2/3, community meeting rooms being taken away...
We are a group of local library users who want to make sure this doesn't happen. We need your support now to make sure that they see sense and safeguard the future of Marcus Garvey library for the future of Tottenham.

Please safeguard Marcus Garvey library in Tottenham from cuts and reorganisation. Please protect the current facilities, resources, activities and dedicated staff in the chidlren's library and adult's library. Please reconsider any plans to repurpose the first floor of the library. The local community uses and needs this facility. The library is a popular, well run facility in a deprived area of the borough. It should be a key resource for the council as it aims to fulfill its 'Investing in our tomorrow' plans for the borough; particularly around improving the early learning offer for young people, promoting community cohesion, providing safe spaces for families and improving library facilities. We call on you to safeguard Marcus Garvey library from cuts and reorganisation in this coming budget and in any future council plans.
