Tell Governor Spanberger to Veto SB 749 and Protect Responsible Gun Owners
The Issue
Virginia’s General Assembly has passed Senate Bill 749, a sweeping restriction on the sale and transfer of certain semi-automatic firearms and magazines over 15 rounds.
While current owners may keep firearms they already possess, the bill would criminalize future purchases and limit access to firearms commonly owned by law-abiding Virginians. Retailers report that AR-15-style rifles alone account for roughly 30% of their sales, reflecting how common these firearms are among responsible gun owners.
Supporters say the legislation is aimed at preventing mass shootings. But critics argue the bill targets widely owned firearms and creates legal risks for ordinary citizens, especially with magazine restrictions that may be difficult to enforce or document.
The Second Amendment protects the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. Courts continue to weigh how far states can go in regulating commonly owned firearms.
We urge Governor Abigail Spanberger to veto Senate Bill 749 and instead pursue policies that target violent offenders directly without restricting constitutional rights of responsible gun owners.
Public safety and constitutional liberty must coexist.
Sign this petition to call on Governor Spanberger to veto SB 749 and protect Virginians’ Second Amendment rights.
