Tell France to Pay Back Haiti's "Independence" Debt

The Issue

In 1825, France imposed a 90-million francs debt on Haiti in exchange for its freedom. The amount, about $21 billion, is enough to cover reconstruction costs and help Haiti take charge of its national affairs. A letter by global authors and activists to President Nicolas Sarkozy demands the money be paid immediately. Join them by asking France to make good on its former colony.
