The Issue

Have you ever shuddered when your bus or car goes over a pothole in Hastings? Or fallen off your bike?

Roads in Hastings Borough are in far worse condition than any other area in East Sussex, due to years of under investment by East Sussex County Council (ESCC). Potholes cause considerable damage to buses and other vehicles and are a serious accident risk for cyclists.

Suspension damage to buses costs Stagecoach three times more in Hastings than at any other depot in the country, and leads to breakdowns and delays in the service.

Now the government has given local authorities additional funding for highway maintenance 2025-26, so ESCC will receive an extra £5.57 million to fill potholes and repair roads.

Hastings Sustainable Transport Forum, Hastings Urban Bikes and Hastings Area Bus Users Group are urging ESCC to take immediate action and carry out a proper repair programme for Hastings roads, to put right years of neglect in our town.

This petition calls on East Sussex County Council, via East Sussex Highways, to prioritise road repair work in Hastings using the Government’s extra funding allocation. Please support, sign and share the petition and report potholes on the ESCC website or Fix My Street. Thank you!
