The local election results are in, and the cost of living crisis was at the forefront of people's minds; tell the new Full Council meeting on 25th May to tackle the cost of living and poverty crisis in Derby!
Back #FairChanceDerby - read more + sign the e-petition at: https://www.change.org/FairChanceDerby before 25th May!
The cost of living has been cited as a key factor in voting choices, with people posting photos of 'polling station' signs beside 'foodbank' signage and people lamenting the queues to vote alongside queues for food; we saw a few changes in our local Council as the votes were counted overnight - now let's send a clear message to the Council's first post-election meeting.
“As a teacher I see the impact of poverty on the children I work with” says Nicola in #Derby from hunger to homelessness, soaring energy bills and evictions, to desperate DIY dental care, freezing homes, parents skipping meals to feed the kids, turning to payday loans and loan sharks, and empty bellies in school classrooms, people are struggling.
Our petition and Street Action: Poverty + Cost of Living Crisis events amplify the issues + will lead to a motion at Full Council to adopt the proposals including signing up to the Socio-Economic Duty (originating from the Equality Act 2010, rolled out in Scotland & Wales but leaving England behind); Councils in other cities have already voluntarily signed up to make sure that no Council decisions or policies cause or worsen poverty and instead aim to reduce struggles and disadvantage - let's make Derby that kind of city too.
