Thanks so much for your support of this community effort to save historic City Park Golf Course (CPGC) from destruction by the City of Denver. They want to install one part of a 1964-style storm drainage system to keep the proposed, "sunken" monster, Highway I 70 Boondoggle from flooding.
As you know, the city wants to :
• Destroy historic CPGC, an excellent example of the work of famous golf course designer Tom Bendelow: http://tclf.org/pioneer/tom-bendelow
• shut the course for 2 years
• fence it off entirely and hide it from view
• bulldoze the beloved club house, built in 2001
• tear out 200+ trees
• dig up 50 acres of soil on the west end of the park and dump it on the east end of the course during construction, destroying more trees
• Our professional engineers have many questions and concerns about the high water table in CPGC and potential flooding in neighborhoods on the NW corner of the course.
• What will happen to property values around the park when trees are chopped down and after two years of construction with big, loud, polluting machinery . Dust? Dirt?
• There are further health and safety concerns about dangerous, industrial storm drainage infrastructure and about bringing toxic storm water run off into the golf course/park. http://www.ucdenver.edu/faculty-staff/jguo/Documents/papers/(SP6)SAFETY%20OF%20DETENTION%20AND%20RETENTION%20PONDS.pdf
• Would you want your pets drinking toxic storm water or your children wading in it? https://youtu.be/vyWTRbym4v0
• Standing water, even little bits of it, provide excellent breeding grounds for disease bearing mosquitoes. Would the spray that the city uses to keep the mosquito populations in check be hazardous to your health? http://www.coloradoindependent.com/158574/the-west-braces-for-rise-in-mosquito-borne-diseases
• And who is going to clean out the big trash traps in the drains and how often?
• What is going to happen to the trash and toxic residue left in the park when Denver brings floods to the park? City Park Golf Course is not now in a flood plain. https://www.denverite.com/north-denver-flood-plan-explained-2541/
• Lost wildlife habitat; 165 species of birds use CPGC for a part of their life cycles. That habitat will disappear and not be replaced in your life time. CPGC was an Audubon Bird Sanctuary. The city claims that they have not done any inventory of wildlife that would be displaced by the destruction of historic CPGC.
• . TRAFFIC anyone?? It has been confirmed, Denver is dreaming about building a BIG new events center in CPGC, up on the hill, across from the Denver Zoo.
23rd Avenue is already clogged with impassable traffic on weekends from events at the Denver Zoo and the Science and Nature Museum. Can you imagine what it will be like if Denver puts the entrance to the new EVENT center, complete with a turn lane and a traffic light... on 23rd, across from the Zoo?
• . Most people are happy with the existing club house located at 26th Ave and York St. , with its beautiful patio and Bogey's restaurant.
Denver Parks and Recreation Director , Happy Haynes, apparently wants to "monetize" the park and what better way than to knock dow the existing club house and build a new, big cash cow event center like the Denver Botanic Garden? With YOUR increased STORMWATER fees.
• Destroy the best, most progressive storm water (rain) mitigation system in the world, open land, in CPGC. Soil rich in microbial life from years of growth, big trees and vegetation captures, cleans and stores millions of gallons of precious rain water every year. Denver will need to preserve rain water to survive drought. Why is Denver destroying this perfect, natural system to install on old fashioned, engineered DRAIN, designed to rush our rain out of Denver as quickly as possible? Sounds crazy.
Finally, CPGC is on the National and State Registers of Historic Places for a reason. It was designed in 1912, by a master golf course designer, Tom Bendelow,
the "Johnny Appleseed " of public golf courses in the USA. It was created in the Olmsted style. Olmsted was the famous park designer who created Central Park in NYC and other famous big parks in the United States. http://tclf.org/landscapes/city-park-golf-denver
Why is this happening? Denver and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)worked together to make a plan to expand Highway , I -70 . This inner city freeway was an environmental , social and economic injustice when it was built in 1964. Why are they expanding it to make it three time wider through poor Latino neighborhoods and make more people sick? https://www.denvergov.org/content/dam/denvergov/Portals/746/documents/HIA/HIA%20Composite%20Report_9-18-14.pdf
Denver and CDOT purposely "separated " the I 70 expansion from the drainage that would be needed to keep it from flooding ( they are gong to create an very expensive engineering "marvel" when they lower a 2 mile section down 20 feet below the water table, next to the river, in a toxic Superfund Site.) The EPA requires an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)that includes all areas affected by the project .. if there are federal dollars involved. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3tj3PB9uPWZY1J2MDBMTURERVk/view?usp=sharing
By saying ( wink wink) that the projects were not related... they seem to have escaped the necessity of including parks and neighborhoods that will be adversely impacted by the P2PH drain, in the EIS. Denver has agreed to pay CDOT $5000 a day if its drainage project isn't finished on schedule. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3tj3PB9uPWZNXJ5WW5UNkQtREE/view?usp=sharing
The Sierra Club is suing the EPA to stop I 70, challenging the air standards. There is also a law suit to stop the destruction of historic City Park Golf Course.
Your participation in this petition is bringing a lot of attention to the cause to save CPGC.
You can help support the law suit by making a donation, on line, in any amount over $5 :https://www.gofundme.com/cityparklegalfund
The legal team is donating their time but $$$ is needed for court costs and experts. More info: http://www.westword.com/news/lawsuit-looms-over-denvers-stormwater-fee-hike-city-park-golf-course-plans-8008741
Thank each and every one of you for your participation in this effort.
We will be announcing some outdoor "actions" since summer seems to be here!!
See VIDEO. Globeville Landing Park has been destroyed, denuded.. to make way for a part of the BIG DRAIN. The outfall for the DRAIN is being built in land fill located in a Superfund Site. Our engineers have many questions about the potential for failure : https://youtu.be/df_wGMWRcXs
