CITY PARK FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS

PLEASE SHOW UP: Trees and wildlife are counting on you.
DENVER IS HOLDING A CITY PARK GOLF COURSE "REDESIGN" OPEN HOUSE DROP IN.
WHEN: Tuesday, January 31,
TIME: 5:30 - 7:30
WHERE: CITY PARK GOLF COURSE CLUB HOUSE , 26TH AVE & YORK ST.
LET DENVER HEAR YOUR CONCERNS.
(FYI: A "drop in" is designed, on purpose, so that participant can't hear the concerns of others. )
Here are a few concerns.... for starters:
•Close the course for two years.
•. Cause increased traffic on 23rd Ave. and/or on 26th avenues with new "Event Center" in CPGC . The Denver Zoo and the museum already cause terrible traffic back ups on 23rd.
•Chop down up to 285 trees that are vital to our urban forest, heat control, rain water retention, cleaning and storage and clean air. They will replace them with "tiny trees."
•Bulldoze the club house that we just paid in excess of $3M to build in 2001.
• Destroy crucial habitat for wild life. 166 species of birds alone rely on the park for at least a part of their life cycle.
•. Destroy over 100 acres of soil micro biome that holds and cleans rain water. Microbe communities in the soil nurture trees and serve as communication highways for plants and trees to exchange nutrients and information.
•. Cause the City Park Golf Course to be taken off of the National and State Registers of historic places. The history will be gone.
• Destroy an historic 18 hole golf course that was designed by famous course designer,Tom Bendelow in 1913. CPGC is one of two pristine examples of his work left in the US..
• City promised a PGA Championship Course to replace the present course. CPGC is just 130 acres. Is it really possible to put a Championship course on this small piece of land? Will it still be affordable?
•. Historic views could be lost
•. As usual , Denver never asked the people if they wanted the Platte to Park Hill (P2PH) boondoggle drainage project that includes CPGC. P2PH is going to eat up most of our storm water fees for decades to come. Denver just holds "public" meetings to publicize their plans. They never ask for permission from the owners... us.
•. Denver never informed residents of health and safety risks associated with placing an industrial storm draining system in a park that is no where near a flood plain.
•. We are being told that we are going to have to sacrifice our historic CPGC for a project designed to keep another 1965 style idea , the I70 Highway expansion , from flooding ( it has been termed a Boondoggle by a national non profit). Of course the developers in the mayor's Corridor of Opportunity north if I70 will benefit greatly.
•. Contrary to what Denver says, destroying historic City Park Golf Course will do nothing to stop "flooding" in established neighborhoods.
• Other parts of the drainage system will expose resident to toxic pollutants found in the I 70/ Vasquez Superfund site when Denver digs up 39th ave and Globeville Park.
* CPGC has served minority and middle class people since 1913. It is one of the only affordable courses in Denver. After the city spends million to build a "championship course", will it still be affordable?
•Denver wants to build a large, new events center plus a new parking lot, in the middle of the course. Do we really want to turn our peaceful park space into a Botanic Gardens-like , expensive event center?
• Denver want to hold a 3 day music festival at historic Overland Golf Course, that is expected to attract 200,000 people. Could Denver have this in mind for CPGC? No details about the damage that would be done to the course or to the neighbors who would have to listen to the "boom boom" late into the night.
•. The Drainage system will bring millions of gallons of filthy, toxic storm water onto our golf course. Do we want to expose our children our pets and ourselves to this toxic water?
•. The drainage system will bring tons of debris and trash into the CPGC. It will be a continuing maintenance nightmare. Denver has a horrible track record of caring for infrastructure. Just think of the potholes in our streets.
• Industrial drainage infrastructure is dangerous and has caused injuries and death in many places including Denver.
* The stream of toxic storm water that will come out of a 10 foot high pipe from City Park into CPGC, will bring with it mosquitoes that carry diseases like West Nile.
• It is likely that if there is a big storm, the homes around the north west end of the park will be flooded , especially if trash accumulates as a result to the storm.
• Will our once beautiful, historic, peaceful CPGC, used by golfers, skiers, runners, dog walkers, walkers, diners ,children , dreamers and peace seekers will be turned into another expensive, "vibrant" , loud, event venue for concerts, and other cash generating promotions for Mayor Hancock?
• Should we be spending our storm water fees on a state transportation project , I 70 ? Denver says the there is a $1.5Billion back log of storm water projects in Denver. Why are we spending all but $30Million of over $300Million, in increased storm water fees on one project to protect a transportation project and new development? Why aren't we taking care of what we have? We will be burdened by the debt for this project for the next 30 years.
• And.... a big question is ... why... when Denver is facing climate change and drought is Hancock spending our tax dollars and fees to build a big DRAIN to get precious rain water out of Denver as quickly as possible, in an antiquated system that pollutes our drinking water supply and the South Platte river.... ?
Where is SCIENCE in Denver's plans for DRAINAGE? Progressive cities are developing green infrastructure plans to capture rain water where it falls and allow it to be absorbed, cleaned and stored by trees, plants and microbes in soil. WE NEED open spaces and big trees to control heat in our city and to clean the air.
FINALLY... ALL OF YOUR INPUT IS WORTH NOTHING. Denver is going to hire a contractor who is going make all of the decisions about how CPGC would be redone. The city is looking for a DESIGN BUILD contract. Some unknown , profit driven contractor will be deciding what CPGC is gong to look like.
Why is Denver cutting down 280+ big trees and paving over even more of our open space?
Science, like sustainability , is not a part of Denver's "planning" for the future.
Denver can do better but we all have to stand up and let our voices be heard.
PLEASE come to City Park Golf Course on January 31 and let Denver hear from YOU!
TREES AND WILDLIFE HAVE NO VOICE.... EXCEPT YOURS.
