Tell Congress to pass the SAFE Act (H.R. 113 / S.1706) to permanently ban horse slaughter
0 have signed. Let’s get to 25,000!
Federal legislation to ban the cruel transport of horses bound for slaughter plants outside of the United States is needed IMMEDIATELY! If the Safeguard American Food Exports Act (SAFE) Act isn't passed, between 100,000-150,000 American horses annually will continue to be transported for up to two days at a time, often without water, food or rest, to slaughter plants in Canada, Mexico and sometimes beyond.
The methods used to kill horses for slaughter rarely result in quick, painless deaths, as horses often endure repeated blows and sometimes remain conscious during their dismemberment.
Also, it is well documented that horsemeat is unsafe. Because American horses are not raised as livestock, they frequently are given medications banned for human consumption by the USDA and European Union.
More than 80% of the public, the HSUS, the ASPCA and other horse and wild horse welfare organizations are opposed to horse slaughter and support this bill.
Your voice is needed now and could mean the difference between life and horrible death for more than 100,000 U.S. horses -- both wild and domestic -- each year.
