Update: I encourage everyone who's signed this petition to also sign the Transportation for America petition also calling on Congress to pass this emergency spending bill for public transit. Link: http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/t/3224/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2468
Also the Save Our Ride campaign also has been mapping the public transit funding crisis and encourage you to add your name, zip code and a description of why you support public transit to their map as well. Here is their link: http://www.ourride.org/?page_id=238
Currently, there is a public transit funding crisis nationwide. A number of cities and municipalities are struggling to continue public transportation services. In Yuma County the Yuma County Area Transit or YCAT bus service for Yuma AZ and neighboring cities in Yuma County along with the Dial A Ride risk suspension due to budgetary problems and mismanagement. Without these services though not only will it become harder for individuals using public transit to get to and from work or other places (for those who don't drive but use public transit) but bus drivers will lose their jobs. Also individuals using public transit to get to work will have a harder time doing so. Suspending bus services can make things worse when attempts are being made to help the economy recover. In Tucson AZ while the Sun Tran service is not being suspended any time soon fares for riders are increasing and some bus routes are being discontinued. If you visit http://t4america.org/resources/transitfundingcrisis/ you will be presented with a national map by Transportation of America they establish to map the public transit funding crisis. If your service is not listed on the map please contact Transportation for America to get it added.
In response to this public transit funding crisis some U.S. Senators have drafted and proposed the Public Transportation Preservation Act or S. 3412 to help resolve the budgetary problems and allocates $2 billion to states to keep public transit services running. Let's send Congress a resounding message to pass the Public Transportation Preservation Act asap!
