Teacher’s and Students Told To Take Their Turbans Off At A Brampton School

The Issue

On Friday April 14th students apart of a SSA club put together an event for Vasakhi, where RoohAfza and mango shakes were given out. After the students talked to many people in the community and many organizations about tying Paag’s (Turbans) on the day of Vasakhi. Students ran an Paag tying booth where many students and staff lined up to get beautiful Distaar’s tied on their heads. A few days before that event took place students ran An educational event where they talked about what Vaisakhi is and how there will be a turban tying event where many of these teachers were present. After the event finished administrators forced staff and students who were not Sikh to remove the Distaars and many Turbans were taken from them. Students and parents felt like the school had disrespected the Turban by telling staff and students to take it off like it was a “hat”. As well as confiscating Turbans.  As many know Turban tying is done all the time whether that be at the Gurdwara, Nagar Kirtan, and community events. But the fact that students and staff wanted to willingly get turbans tied but later were forced to remove Turbans shows a sign of disrespect to the Turban. Turbans were tied by high Mughal emperors during the time of the Guru’s and were a sign of rich and superior. Many say Guru Nanak tied the Turban as a way to combat the idea that everyone is equal and it was a way to cover one’s head since it covers a sacred part of the body. Students thought by running such event it would connect students to the fundamentals of Sikhi and bring them closer to the understanding of what the Turban really holds. Many students who don’t normally die turbans felt more connected in the moment and many came to students later thinking about growing there hair and connecting themselves to Sikhi.
