Target: Stand by DEI Commitments and Uphold Values of Progress and Equity

The Issue

We, Target customers, urge Target to reaffirm its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and reject any efforts to scale back these vital initiatives.

Target’s headquarters are in Minnesota—a state known for its progressive values and a history that includes the tragic murder of George Floyd, an event that sparked a global reckoning on systemic racism. Scaling back DEI initiatives sends a message that disparities faced by marginalized communities are no longer a priority, despite overwhelming evidence that they remain urgent and pervasive.

The Call to Action

We ask Target to:

  1. Publicly reaffirm its commitment to DEI initiatives and goals.

  2. Continue investing in programs that address disparities in hiring, promotion, and leadership representation for marginalized communities.

  3. Expand community partnerships to support equity efforts across Minnesota and beyond.

Target has been a pioneer in adopting inclusive practices. To scale back now would be a disservice to your employees, your customers, and the broader community. It would signal that progress is not worth the effort—something we know is not true.

Why This Matters

DEI is not a political statement; it is a moral and business imperative. Diverse and inclusive companies perform better, foster innovation, and better reflect the communities they serve. More importantly, they stand on the right side of history.

Minnesota is watching. The nation is watching. We urge Target to stand firm and continue leading the way in building a more just and equitable world.

Together, we can show that corporations can be both successful and socially responsible. Let’s make Minnesota proud.

Sign this petition to tell Target: DEI is not just a buzzword—it’s a commitment to fairness, progress, and equity for all.

Update 4/25/2025:

Target's revenues and profits have drastically fell. They are trying to meet with community leaders to avoid more boycotts. But, they are not re-committing to DEI. They are still sticking by their decision to rollback DEI initiatives. And we've learned that they contributed $1 million dollars to the Trump inauguration which has spearheaded calls for the end to DEI.

Keep fighting! Keep passing this petition around!

Update 3/10/2025:

Target has been feeling the consequences of their decisions on DEI and this petition will continue to be at least one small point of resistance and push-back in that movement. Thank you all for continuing to do what you do! It's now also been over a month and a half or so since I've set foot in a Target store.

Update 2/11/2025:

As of this time, there are more protests, more companies and organizations pulling back from Target. They are some of the companies who are being looked at for possible larger scale boycotts.

While Target and others are standing on ground saying that they are committed to BIPOC businesses and suppliers they already have, etc., etc., it's still a distraction. It's still a smoke screen. They could be like other companies firmly behind Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and communicating that. And they would be better off.

But they have not. And are still not. This petition will continue.

Update 1/30/2025:

Thank you to all who've signed and supported this petition! Initially I just wanted 5 signatures and now we're almost at 100!

Update 1/28/2025:

This petition, hopes to offer some resistance, be it large or small, against Target's pullback on DEI.

While the petition has just started and is still smaller, it is gaining momentum and is having a pretty great conversion rate (seen -> signatures). It is with hope that in the coming days and weeks, the support and signatures can grow to help signal to Target, and the rest of the community, that creating an equitable and fair playing field to help right the wrongs that have limited the options and resources of marginalized communities, is something that we need to fight for, not only for us, but for the generations yet to come.

In that way, no matter how many signatures the petition receives, it's about action and voice, and small ripples that can have far reaching impacts, which can manifest itself in a myriad of different ways.
