Take bullying more seriously

Take bullying more seriously
The Issue
Bullying is not “just part of growing up” – it is a serious issue that can have lasting effects on a person’s mental health, education, employment, relationships, and future. Many people think of bullying as something that only happens between children, but that is simply not true. Bullying can happen at any age and can be carried out by both children and adults. It can occur in schools, workplaces, online, within families, social groups, and communities. In some cases, bullying is even carried out by adults in positions of trust and authority, making victims feel powerless and afraid to speak up.
In England and Wales, an estimated 34.9% of children aged 10–15 experienced face-to-face bullying, while 19.1% experienced online bullying. Research also suggests that around 1 in 3 UK employees have experienced workplace bullying or harassment at some point in their careers. The effects of bullying can be devastating, leading to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, social isolation, poor educational outcomes, reduced job performance, self-harm, and, in some cases, suicidal thoughts.
Despite these alarming figures, many victims feel their experiences are ignored, dismissed, or not taken seriously enough. Too often, action is only taken after significant emotional or psychological harm has already been done. No child should feel unsafe at school, and no adult should have to endure bullying, intimidation, or harassment in their workplace, community, or everyday life.
We call on schools, workplaces, local authorities, and the Government to strengthen anti-bullying measures, improve reporting systems, provide better support for victims, and ensure all reports of bullying are taken seriously and acted upon promptly. There must be greater accountability for those who bully others, regardless of their age, position, or status.
I am putting this petition together to raise awareness of the serious impact bullying has on people of all ages and to push for stronger action against it. Bullying should never be accepted as a normal part of life, whether it comes from peers, colleagues, strangers, or adults in positions of authority. By signing and sharing this petition, you are helping to send a clear message that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported. Together, we can create a culture where bullying is recognised for the harm it causes, victims are heard, and meaningful action is taken to prevent it. Every voice matters, and together we can help put a stop to bullying.
