Take Back Our Soccer Field: The Old Boys High School Field

Take Back Our Soccer Field: The Old Boys High School Field
The Issue
For over 40 years, the Old Boys High School Field has been a vital part of the West Indian community in Brooklyn. This field has been more than just a sports venue; it has been a cultural hub where people from all backgrounds gather to celebrate their love for soccer and other sports. The significance of this field extends beyond Brooklyn. If you visit Jamaica and mention the Old Boys Field, you'll often hear, "Yes, that's where they have the West Indian soccer tournaments."
This field has hosted countless tournaments and community events, fostering sportsmanship and cultural pride. It has been a place where generations have come together to play, watch, and enjoy the beautiful game of soccer.
However, recent developments threaten this cherished tradition. The permits for the organizations that have long managed and utilized the field are being revoked. This decision not only disrupts the lives of those who use the field regularly but also threatens the cultural heritage and community spirit that the field embodies.
We, the undersigned, urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and restore the permits for the organizations that have been the stewards of the Old Boys High School Field for decades. Taking away this field would be a disservice to the community and a loss to the cultural fabric of Brooklyn.
Please sign this petition to help us take back our soccer field and preserve a vital piece of our community’s heritage. Soccer tournaments, the Grenada/Guyana Day festival, Friends of Wingate Park's Family Fun Day, and numerous other organizations rely on this field. We need our elected officials to address this issue and ensure these organizations are grandfathered in to continue their important work.
This is not just a local or national issue; it's a global one.
