The Issue
I've witnessed firsthand the heart-wrenching sight of animals living in deplorable conditions, not only in my community but also in many other countries. This personal experience has driven me to call for immediate action against animal abuse and neglect. We must urge those with the power to make a difference, such as the United Nations Secretary General, government ministries of environment and agriculture, heads of organizations like OIE, WWF, IFAW as well as influential advocates like Jane Goodall, David Attenborough and Ricky Gervais.
Animal abuse is not an isolated issue; it's a global problem that needs our urgent attention. According to World Animal Protection's 2020 report on global animal welfare standards (source: World Animal Protection), over 75% of countries worldwide have no or minimal protections for animals. This alarming statistic highlights the urgency for international bodies like the UN to take notice.
Our governments too have a crucial role in implementing policies that protect animals from cruelty and preserve their habitats. The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 60% of terrestrial biodiversity loss is related to food production (source: FAO). Therefore, it is imperative for ministries responsible for environment and agriculture globally to prioritize animal welfare.
Influential organizations such as OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health), WWF (World Wildlife Fund) & IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) have significant influence on these issues. They can drive change by advocating stricter laws against animal cruelty.
