Help International Students going to Taiwan

Help International Students going to Taiwan

The Issue

English version available ▼

Taiwan is one of the world's best in handling the COVID-19 pandemic. Although close in proximity to China, Taiwan has managed to keep COVID-19 cases low, without implementing any form of lockdown. To keep Taiwan this safe is why I believe Taiwan has restricted international student entry this year only for students from safer countries: Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong are examples.

Yet a number of international students in Taiwan do not come from these countries. These students are out of luck because Taiwanese universities do not fully do online learning. Some universities do not provide online classes,  forcing students to take a gap year. Some universities provide only a limited number of courses online. Some provide no information at all.

This petition is asking for Taiwan to consider loosing up its strict student entry restrictions to allow entry for more international students. Every visitor to Taiwan is required to do 14 days of home quarantine, reducing any possibility of transmitting COVID-19. Singapore has given us an example that letting students in while keeping its citizens safe is possible.

If loosening up entry restrictions is not feasible, please, at the very least, require universities to provide online classes. Online classes still are unideal and should be kept as a last resort.
