The Issue
Replace Heavy School Bags with Secure Educational Tablets
Target Decision-Makers: The Ministry of Education (Government of India), Chairperson of CBSE, and State Education Boards.
The Hook (Why this matters right now)Every single day, millions of Indian school children march to school looking less like students and more like laborers, carrying backpacks that weigh up to 20-30% of their own body weight. Study after study by orthopedic experts warns that this chronic strain leads to early-onset back pain, spinal curvature, and permanent posture damage.
We live in a digital India where banking, governance and business happen on screens. Yet, our education system forces students to carry kilograms of paper that are outdated the moment they are printed.
It is time to evolve. We demand a phased transition from heavy, expensive physical textbooks to locked, education-only tablets.
The Problem with the Status QuoHealth Crisis: The physical toll on growing children is unacceptable. Heavy bags are a literal health hazard.
Economic & Environmental Waste: Millions of rupees are spent annually by parents buying new editions of textbooks, and tons of paper are wasted printing updates that could easily be pushed via a software sync.
The Digital Divide: Students who do not learn to interact seamlessly with technology are left behind in the modern job market.
Our Core Demands (The Solution)We are not asking to increase screen time for entertainment, nor are we asking for a chaotic, overnight shift. We urge the Ministry of Education to implement the #TabsNotTextbooks policy through the following structured steps:
Introduce "E-Basta" Tablets: Replace core textbooks for Classes 6 to 12 with a single, lightweight E-Ink or low-blue-light tablet that mimics paper and prevents eye strain.
Mandatory Device Lockdown: These tablets must use strict Mobile Device Management (MDM) software. They will have no social media, no YouTube, and no gaming—only pre-loaded NCERT/State Board textbooks, educational apps and offline reading materials.
Government-Subsidized Leases: For government and low-income schools, the budget currently used to print and distribute physical textbooks should be redirected to leasing durable, low-cost tablets to students, ensuring no child is left behind.
Why This Will WorkThis isn't a radical experiment; it's a logical step. States like Haryana and Kerala have already successfully piloted localized tablet distribution. It is time to scale this nationwide. By switching to tablets, we save our children's spines, save our forests and save parents money in the long run.
