Truckers Against Reserved Spots
5 mar 2018
On January 16th, 2018 one of the members of Truckers Against Reserved Parking Spots sent a letter of inquiry to TA/Petro and got the run around. If you have copies of emails or correspondents with any of the trucking companies, please do not hesitate to send in your story. Email sent by our member: “I, like most drivers now, am using electronic logs in my truck. Though this has provided many advantages to the driver, one that it has eliminated, is the "grace period" at the end of our shift where I look for a parking spot. I'm always fighting that clock. That's why I was so thrown off to see reserved spots at all the truck stops. They just popped up one day. But, like most drivers, I just put my head down and worked hard. But recently, I've noticed that the number of spots that require daily payment, have increased. Seemingly to the count of 50% at some truck stops, including yours. Now, I assume you are not the person making this call, since I have seen this stuff at other establishments as well. However, I'd feel not myself, if I didn't speak up about this. Professional drivers are already worked hard and shorted in many ways. From the shrinking number of new drivers entering the profession, to decreased pay industry wide, to DOT, to increased count of no parking signs, to now more and more and more spots at truck stops, such as yours, requiring drivers such as myself to have to pay over $15 a night just to take the much needed (and legally required) rest we need. Hardly seems fair. So I reach out to you, with full disclosure (I have cc'ed my Safety Manager on this email) to ask you a simple question. Why? And if you don't have the answer I absolutely accept that. But I do then ask you to please point me in the direction of whom I should speak with. I do wish to state that I am taking it upon myself as a driver, and not as a representative of my company, to reach out to you. I thank you for your time, honesty and professionalism on this and all matters, and I look forward to hearing back. “ This was the response that was received: “Good Morning, The most simple and direct answer is demand. We review parking occupancy every two months to determine proper space allocation, as well as pricing. If a site is regularly selling out their Reserve-It! spaces, that indicates a need for expansion. The last one that we did was October, so December was next on the list. That's also when the ELD mandate went into effect, so the timing did appear to be aligned. I do understand the reputational risk to keeping to the schedule, but it was established as it was for a reason, and involves things like vendor production schedules, etc. As it stands today, only 14-15% of our spaces are designated for the Reserve-It! program. As you've identified, some of the more constrained sites like Seattle East, Mt. Vernon, Cartersville, and Florence, KY have had a larger amount of parking devoted to Reserve-It! I've been getting a lot of feedback about Cartersville and Mt. Vernon, and will discuss with the area directors for the sites when we meet again in Early February to discuss further space count adjustments. Thank you again for your patronage.
