Save Caloola Road Reserve

Save Caloola Road Reserve

The issue

Caloola Road Reserve in Constitution Hill NSW is under threat and is at risk of being closed and lost to the public forever. The land is owned by Sydney Water and was previously being leased to Parramatta City Council for use as a public space. Despite just under 20 years left on the 40 year lease, Sydney Water have recently reclaimed the land and intend to sell it off. Caloola Road Reserve is popular among local residents, as a social meeting place, a play area for children and a place to take their dogs. It also boasts great views over Parramatta and distant city views (great for watching the NYE fireworks).  Apart from the social and community significance, the Reserve also holds great historical significance; the high vantage point served as a meeting place and look-out post for the Irish Rebels during the Battle of Vinegar Hill in 1804. After numerous emails and phone calls, Sydney Water have agreed to hold off on selling the land while they investigate the details of the lease and also hear the concerns of local residents. We have made this petition as a way of showing Sydney Water and Parramatta City Council just how many people are concerned regarding the closure of Caloola Road Reserve. We want the Reserve to remain a public space for all to use, and to protect this historical site from development. Green open spaces are becoming increasingly scarce these days and therefore we must fight to save for each and every piece of public land, such as Caloola Road Reserve.
