Sussex Downs College Canteen and Shop
The Issue
I am writing on behalf of the student body here at Sussex Downs College to formally complain about the standard of the college canteen and shop that we have returned to this year.
The first issue that was brought to our attention this year was the sudden increase in the prices of the products sold; this would have been acceptable to us if the quality had remained the same but the opposite has occurred. We are paying obscene prices for poorly catered foods and smaller portions. What used to be affordable lunches and snacks for students is now no cheaper for us than purchasing off campus.
What most concerns us for the wellbeing of us as students is the fact that there are no longer any healthy options for us other than to pay £1 for a less than 10 grapes or melon chunks (which is actually less than a portion of your 5 a day). However the college seems to have overstocked on products such as chocolate, crisps and sweets; all products that are high in sugar, fat or salt. How can you promote a healthy college lifestyle when you provide no products to contribute? Using the stairs alone will not burn off a Double Decker! You have claimed to be healthier now that you no longer sell curry sauce with the chips, yet cheesy chips are acceptable? You have sacrificed all of your healthy foods for more confectionary thus losing many people as customers such as myselfand are also creating further unhealthy eating habits.
Also, what is there for those who are intolerant to wheat, gluten and dairy products?! The most you can offer is a pot of grapes or a bag of chips, this is not a substantial lunch that we as students should be entitled to to help us stay focused and achieve in our subjects. We used to be able to buy rice cakes, salads and nuts, all of which you have thrown away, and when we asked you to restock it as many of us do buy these products, you refused. Vegetarians also have no food options other than a greasy processed pasty that has sat under a heat lamp all day long, if this was you, would you chose this unhealthy a lunch each day?
Unless we see a drastic and rapid change in your catering for us we as students, will no longer be wasting our money on your products, as we would happily take a walk into town to buy better quality and healthier foods for an awful lot cheaper.
Yours Sincerely
