Putting a tax on single-use plastic in Australia

In 2016-17, Australians used 5.66 billion single-use plastic bags. Most of these plastics eventually end up in the ocean, harming thousands of marine animals: endangered and vulnerable. An estimated 8 million tons enter our oceans every year! By putting a tax on plastic, just 1 to 5 cents, businesses that use lots of single-use plastic can seriously consider using biodegradable or changing to recycled plastic. This way, endangered species such as sea turtles and toothed whales are safer in the environment they live in!
By doing this, we are reducing plastic going into plastic dumps in the ocean, which eventually break down into harmful microplastics that cause pollution and ultimately, speed up global warming.
The revenue that is collected from the tax goes towards government funding for recycling plants. From this, everyone gets what they want, and the Earth is a safer place for animals and humans alike.
