SUSPEND POLICE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN WHITECHAPEL ATTACK

The Issue

We urge Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, Local Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway and the Independent Office for Police Conduct to immediately suspend the officers involved in the violent assault on Waseem Yousaf on Friday 12th July 2024, in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets.

In a viral clip, a Police officer is seen repeatedly hitting Waseem, even as he lay face down and not resisting. This was a brutal attack by those meant to protect us. Such behaviour is totally unacceptable and destroys any public trust in the police.

The attack appears to be part of a troubling pattern of politically motivated actions against Palestine activists. With the Labour Party winning the General Election, it seems politicians are stoking fear against a legitimate movement and using the police to serve their political ends.

We demand:

1) A swift, transparent investigation and the immediate suspension of the officer(s) involved pending the outcome.

2) If guidelines were breached, the officer(s) should be dismissed and face criminal charges.
