Suspend congressional paychecks during government shutdown

Suspend congressional paychecks during government shutdown
The Issue
The American people are suffering immeasurably due to the ongoing government shutdown. As a disabled individual who relies on Supplemental Social Security Income (SSI), SNAP Benefits, and Medicaid just to get by, I understand the dire situation many Americans find themselves in. No military personnel should have to question if he/she will be paid in the midst of this shutdown. Our service men and women in uniform whom have served or are currently serving our country deserve to be paid regardless of the government shutdown. We depend on these critical resources for food, shelter, and healthcare. Yet, as our essential benefits hang in the balance, Congress continues to draw their paychecks without fail.
It's time for a change. If our Congress members cannot come to an agreement to reopen the government and restore our vital services, why should they continue to receive their salaries or any form of back pay? Their duty is to serve the American people, and when they fail to do so, they should experience the same sacrifices and hardships that many of us endure.
We propose a simple but impactful solution: suspend all congressional paychecks until a resolution is reached to end the shutdown. Furthermore, redirect the saved funds from these paychecks into programs that provide immediate relief to citizens affected by the closure, including food assistance, housing support, and healthcare services.
The current political stalemate is not just an inconvenience; it's a threat to the well-being and survival of countless Americans. Congress must be held accountable, and their priorities must align with the needs and rights of the people they are sworn to represent.
Now more than ever, we need decisive action that reflects the urgency and seriousness of the situation. Join us in calling for this critical change. Sign this petition and demand that Congress prioritize reopening the government over their own financial interests.
