Supporting Student Well-being: Integrating Mental Health Education into School Curricula
The Issue
Petition for Integrating Mental Health Education into School Curricula
To the Board of Education and School Administrators,
Since the starting of high school, I have seen many of my friends struggling to cope with the high school atmosphere. Some of them have just quit doing their work. They don't care if they get bad grades, they will just sit in a room wondering what are they doing? This shows their mental health isn't the best right now. To make this better we have to integrate mental health education in school curricula.
Who is impacted?
There are not students across the country but the world who are affected by the lack of mental health education in schools. Mental health issues, such as depression and stress, are increasing among students. These problems affect a student's ability to cope with daily life and even participate in extracurricular activities. Without proper mental health education, students to cope with these difficulties alone, often leading to effects on their academic performance
What is at stake?
If we do not integrate mental health education into our school curricula, we can risk a cycle of mental health issues that can lead to long-term problems. Students may continue to suffer which can result in low academic scores, higher dropout rates and increased healthcare costs due to untreated mental health conditions. But by implementing mental health education, we can create an environment that promotes early intervention and helps students with the tools they need to manage their mental health effectively. This approach can significantly enhance student's overall quality of life.
Why is now the time to act?
The urgency to act is important. With mental health issues among students increasing rapidly, immediate action is necessary to provide the support they need. Research and expert opinions, such as Adelman and Taylor (2006), says it is critical to have a early intervention. By addressing this issue now, we can prevent the further escalation of mental health problems and create a healthier student population. The well-being and success of students depend on the steps we take today. Let us not delay any further; the time to integrate mental health education into our school curricula is now.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the essential integration of mental health education in schools, making sure that every student receives the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Together, let's build a future where all students are understood. Your support will make a difference. I am part of the TPW GYP 2024 Program
Sincerely,
