Supporting Student Achievement Through Academic Policy Reform
The Issue
Dear Galen,
I have always spoken positively about Galen and would still recommend it to prospective students. However, many students are concerned about recent grading and testing changes and are requesting a reevaluation.
The following is our suggestions:
First, ATI should remain 4% in lower-level nursing courses and only be weighted at 10% during Capstone. ATI is designed to predict NCLEX success, making it more appropriate for students nearing graduation. In earlier courses, ATI often covers material that has not yet been taught, placing students at a disadvantage.
Second, the use of both ATI and PassPoint in Capstone should be reviewed. These resources often provide conflicting rationales and create unnecessary confusion. One standardized preparation tool would be more effective.
Third, exam weighting in Transitions should be adjusted. With ATI worth 10%, the remaining 90% should be distributed evenly across the three exams at 30% each. Making the final exam worth only 10% does not fairly support student success.
Finally, we ask that Galen review the design and wording of its exams. Many students feel the questions are unnecessarily complex and do not reflect NCLEX-style testing. Recent exams have become increasingly difficult and are contributing to a significant rise in student failures, particularly during the final quarter. We understand nursing exams require critical thinking, but the correct answers on Galen exams often differ from NCLEX and ATI standards, causing confusion and poor outcomes.
While we recognize the importance of maintaining strong NCLEX pass rates, students must first be able to successfully complete the program. We respectfully request a review of these concerns to ensure student success and fairness in evaluation.
