It was a valiant effort, however the vote was made yesterday. SB0180 Substitute 3 - - Passed 56 - 15 - 4, 3/4/2022 5:09 PM.
There are still so many holes in this flawed multi-tiered system that was rushed and pushed through.
What does this mean? This means we have a year to prepare and try to get it over turned next year.
Meanwhile the Department of Professional Licensing (DOPL) will be working to put together the rules and regulations on the new massage therapy assistant (MTA) and massage therapy assistant in training (MTiT) will have to abide by, including the 150 hour curriculum they must complete.
These undereducated LOWER tiers will be marketed by establishments once the rules and regulations are set. They are required by this new law to advise when you will have a session with either a MTA or MTiT. However, it's still unknown if you will be paying the same price or not as many have stated they will not be offering massage with an MTA or MTiA's at a lower rate than an LMT. It's also still unknown if these lower tiered assistants will be able to get malpractice insurance to ensure if they do hurt someone, that person's medical will be covered.
We ask that when you book a massage you seek out, request and ensure you are getting said massage with a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) and NOT an assistant or assistant in training. When you are with the practitioner you can also ask them what their title is. This will help to ensure YOU are getting a massage from a highly trained and qualified Massage Therapist and are safe.
Thank you again for showing your support AGAINST SB180 and doing your part in keeping massage therapy safe.
