The Issue

Ireland’s EMTs, Paramedics, and Advanced Paramedics are asking for fair pay that reflects the reality of the job they perform every day.

We ask for you, the public to support us!

The ambulance service has evolved into a highly skilled frontline healthcare profession. Ambulance clinicians are no longer simply transporting patients — we are delivering advanced emergency care, making critical clinical decisions, administering lifesaving treatments, and managing some of the most serious medical emergencies in our communities every single day.

We are the people who walk directly into trauma scenes, cardiac arrests, serious road traffic collisions, suicides, violent incidents, medical emergencies, and life-threatening situations — often before anyone else arrives. We care for critically ill children, support families through the worst moments of their lives, and make lifesaving decisions under extreme pressure in unpredictable environments.

Despite this level of responsibility, publicly available HSE pay scales show EMTs and Paramedics starting on pay scales comparable to some non-clinical support grades within the wider health service. No healthcare worker should be undervalued, and this is not about diminishing the role of any profession — but frontline ambulance clinicians believe pay should reflect the level of clinical responsibility, risk, education, accountability, and decision-making carried by EMTs, Paramedics, and Advanced Paramedics every day.

Over the years, major investment has been made into fleet, equipment, technology, infrastructure, and service development. Frontline staff support these improvements — but many now feel the people delivering the care have been left behind.

This is about fairness, retaining experienced clinicians, and protecting the future of emergency care in Ireland.

Every EMT, Paramedic, and Advanced Paramedic lost from the service places further pressure on an already stretched system. Retaining skilled frontline clinicians is essential for patient safety and for maintaining a strong ambulance service for the public.

Ambulance personnel are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for fair recognition and a meaningful pay increase that reflects the modern reality of frontline emergency care.

WE ARE NOT JUST AMBULANCE DRIVERS!!!
