Support WA Senate Bill 5065: Prohibit the Use of Wild Animals in Traveling Circuses
The Issue
As residents of Washington State and animal advocates, we urge Governor Ferguson to sign Senate Bill 5065 into law. This pivotal legislation aims to prohibit the use of elephants, primates, bears, and non-domestic cats—such as lions, tigers, and leopards—in traveling circus performances within our state. By enacting this bill, Washington will join a growing number of states committed to ending the exploitation of wild animals in entertainment.
These protections are long overdue. Wild animals in circuses often endure cramped transport conditions, harsh training methods, and environments that fail to meet their physical or psychological needs.
Public safety is also at risk, with documented incidents of animals escaping or behaving unpredictably under stress.
Importantly, this bill aligns with a broader national movement, as several other states—including California, New Jersey, and Colorado—have already enacted similar bans in recognition of evolving animal welfare standards.
Key Provisions of Senate Bill 5065:
- Ban on Specific Wild Animals in Traveling Acts: The bill prohibits the use of elephants, primates, bears, and non-domestic cats in traveling performances.
- Penalties for Violations: Entities found in violation of this law would face gross misdemeanor charges, punishable by up to 364 days in jail, a $5,000 fine, or both.
- Exemptions: The legislation does not affect USDA-licensed permanent institutions, such as accredited zoos and sanctuaries.
Tell Governor Ferguson: Don't delay, make SB 5065 the law and reinforce Washington State's commitment to ethical treatment of animals!
