Support Vito’s Act for Canine Health in Michigan
The Issue
In Michigan, there is a pressing need to elevate the standard of testing provided to our beloved canine companions. Vito’s Act, also known as the Michigan Canine Early Detection Act, aims to do just that by making annual preventive bloodwork screening a standard practice across the state. This initiative comes from a heartfelt place and carries the name of Vito, my cherished dog who inspired this proposal.
Purpose of Vito’s Act
The ultimate goal of Vito’s Act is to detect potential health issues in dogs at an early stage. By implementing regular bloodwork screenings, we can catch diseases early, thereby reducing preventable suffering and significantly improving long-term animal welfare. With these proactive measures, Michigan will be taking a significant step towards ensuring our furry friends live healthier, longer, and happier lives.
The Problem
Unfortunately, many serious canine diseases, such as kidney disease and liver disorders, go unnoticed until they have progressed significantly, leaving pets and their owners with limited options. This lack of early detection leads to avoidable suffering and sometimes dire outcomes for the animals involved. Currently, there is no legal requirement ensuring that preventive blood screenings are performed on dogs. Chemistry panels that evaluate organ function are included in only about 14% of veterinary clinical visits, meaning most dogs do not receive routine screening for organ disease. Traditional testing may not detect kidney disease until up to 75% of kidney function has already been lost. This legislative gap compromises the overall wellbeing of our pets.
The Solution
By institutionalizing annual preventive blood screenings through Vito’s Act, we can bridge this gap. The adoption of this act will mandate comprehensive bloodwork screenings, offering veterinarians critical data that can guide early treatment interventions. Moreover, establishing this practice statewide fosters a preventative approach to canine healthcare that will inevitably save lives and enhance the quality of life for our domesticated animals.
