The Issue

As a youth sport community in Berkeley, we see firsthand the challenges our young athletes face when practices and games are canceled due to unsafe or unplayable field conditions. It is disheartening for players, families, and coaches alike to have seasons disrupted by limited access to reliable fields.

Too often, eager players miss out on valuable opportunities to train, compete, and connect with their teammates. These moments are critical, not just for athletic development, but for building confidence, resilience, and a lasting love for the game. Access to safe, consistent playing spaces should not be a barrier to participation.

The City of Berkeley is currently preparing a $300 million General Obligation (GO) Bond Measure, presenting a critical opportunity to invest in community infrastructure. We believe this must include the turfing of Gabe Catalfo Fields at Harrison Park, along with much-needed upgrades to the park's bathroom facilities.

Gabe Catalfo Fields are more than just fields, they are a vital hub for youth sports and community connection. However, the current grass surfaces are frequently closed due to weather, maintenance, and overuse, creating ongoing challenges for local programs and families who depend on them.

Turfing these fields would:

  • Provide consistent, year-round access for youth sports
  • Reduce cancellations and scheduling disruptions
  • Improve player safety and field quality
  • Increase capacity for community use and recreation

Investing in these upgrades is an investment in the health, well-being, and development of Berkeley's youth. Research consistently shows that participation in sports supports physical health, academic success, and social-emotional growth. Our facilities should reflect the importance of these outcomes.

We urge the City of Berkeley to prioritize the inclusion of Gabe Catalfo Fields in the upcoming bond measure.

Together, we can create a safe, more reliable, and more equitable environment for youth sports in our community.
