The Issue

It's a matter of life and death. In Summerland, our dedicated firefighters stand ready to protect and serve, yet their abilities are constrained due to a lack of mandate for First Responder duties.

Currently, the Summerland Firefighters are not dispatched to provide Medical Response which includes basic life support, such as first aid, CPR, and other critical emergency medical care.

The absence of Medical services from our firefighters means that in emergencies, where BC Ambulance (EHS) may be delayed and the firefighters would be available to assist.

Our firefighters are skilled, brave, and ready to undertake this responsibility with the appropriate training. They risk their lives in fires, saving our homes and our lives; it is only logical that they extend this heroism into medical emergencies as trained First Responders.

The mandate we seek from the Mayor and Council is not without precedent. Numerous firefighting teams across the nation have already embraced the dual role of first responders, effectively reducing emergency response times and ultimately saving lives.

Implementing First Responder training for our firefighters would involve a manageable investment into training and equipment, one that would ensure they are prepared for medical interventions. This investment aligns with a commitment to community safety and ensures our residents receive the swiftest possible care in life-threatening situations.

Join us in urging Mayor and Council to take immediate action. Sign this petition to support the training and official recognition of Summerland Firefighters as First Responders, ensuring a safer, more responsive community for all.

A presentation will be made to City Council through a Delegation on WEDNESDAY October 1, 2025 @ 6:00 pm at the Council Chambers in Municipal Hall (13211 Henry Avenue)
