Support the Strike: Modernization Not Phase Out of Jeepneys in the Philippines
The Issue
All the information here is only used for educational purposes and does not actually need funds to push this petition. Instead, let our voices be heard to help jeepney drivers, commuters, and people who are more likely to be affected in jeepney phase out.
Imagine, what will happen to us without jeepneys.
As a student, that more or less 10 pesos that you have budgeted for your transportation will not be enough anymore. Where else can you find a transportation that cheap?
The underprivilege sector of our society who are driving jeepneys for their living but still not enough for them especially if they have a big family to sustain. How can they sustain their families if they will lose their job?
Jeepney phase out or the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) is announced by the The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) because they insisted that it is environmentally damaging. They want to replace the traditional jeepneys with electric powertrain or a Euro 4-compliant diesel engine for less pollution.
Now the problem lies here:
- It is a requirement that if the jeepney drivers wants to join the modernization program, they must join a cooperative. To form the cooperative, they obliged with the fee of 300,000 php or 20,000 php in each jeepney unit that wants to join the cooperative.
- To get a loan from a government bank, the drivers must present a Local Public Transport Plan, something that many LGUs have neglected to do. Without such a plan, no loan.
- The government only offers a maximum of 360,000 php subsidy to buy a 2.8 million php modernized jeep.
- Transition will occur on which elder people who drives jeepney for a living will be displaced.
What we want is a concrete plan. Higher-ups should offer atleast 50% of the acquisition cost and should not rob the people off.
Imagine, you are an old jeepney driver who should be focusing on your pension and not your debts.
Allow the affected people to co-design the program on which will benefit both parties.
Make a difference by online signing this petition and spreading the word around! The more voices and signatures, the better!
Once again, modernization not jeepney phase out.
