Friend, I’m emailing you today because I am angry.
I live in Perth, and I love this region. I love the WA coastline, the long open sky and the fresh clear water. But a company called Woodside wants to construct two new gas fields, and the government is going to pay them for their destruction. The beautiful land and water that I love is at risk of being polluted. Will you help me fight back by donating?
This gas will be extracted through an incredible damaging process called fracking. Dangerous chemicals, sand and water is forced underground. It contaminates water, farmland and even health of nearby communities.
This gas project would emit more greenhouse gases than FOUR ADANI COAL MINES. It would destroy Indigenous Murujuga rock art, hurt endangered whale and turtle species, and our climate.
Not only is the government allowing this project - they are giving billions of dollars of taxpayer money to gas projects like this. They know gas is too expensive to be profitable without help. I want our Federal government to make responsible choices and invest in clean technology of the future. Renewables are the cheapest form of energy and they would create thousands of new jobs for young people like me. Spending public funds on polluting gas isn’t just a waste of money - it’s putting our safety, our future, and our climate at risk.
This photo is me speaking the strike last year. I grew up on the rural Irish coast. When I was young, I would regularly miss school, and be isolated by dangerous roads. I thought flooding, snow and extreme weather was normal. It was only when I moved to Perth that I learnt it wasn’t. I don’t want to see my new home damaged by gas extraction, and climate change.
But because of people like you, I know that I am not alone in this fight.
The government is trying to sneak ahead and steal our future. We won’t let them. This May 21, we NEED to strike larger than ever, so everyone knows their dirty gas fired secrets.
Please chip in to help me make the strike in Perth as big as possible. We need funds to buy banners, megaphones, speakers and pay council fees.
In solidarity,
Pia, 17 from Perth
