Support the right of return for Chagossians & the right to chose how they will be governed
The Issue
The Chagossians, indigenous to the Chagos Archipelago, have suffered decades of displacement after being forcibly removed from their homeland and their dogs gassed by the United Kingdom. This unjust action has led to the erasure of their community and culture, leaving over 2,000 original inhabitants and thousands of their descendants scattered around the globe without the right to return to their birthplace. The time is now for justice to be restored and for the Chagossians to reclaim their right to return to their homeland.
The Chagos Archipelago, a British Indian Ocean Territory, was depopulated between 1968 and 1973 to make way for a U.S. military base on Diego Garcia. This mass eviction was carried out without consultation, compensation, or consideration of the Chagossians' future. Despite several legal battles and international support, the Chagossian people have yet to access a fair solution to their plight.
The International Court of Justice and the United Nations General Assembly have called upon the UK to hand over the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius, reinforcing the Chagossians' right to return and self-determination. The Chagossian voices should be heard, and their autonomy respected. We propose creating a path for Chagossians to choose their governance, such as becoming a Crown Dependency similar to Jersey or Guernsey, allowing them to have their own elected legislative assembly or alternatively becoming a UK Overseas Territory.
Supporting this petition is a step toward acknowledging past injustices and fostering reconciliatory measures. It is crucial for those in power to recognize the importance of identity, culture, and territorial rights. By signing this petition, you endorse the restoration of dignity, equality, and freedom for the Chagossian people.
