Pollinator Garden Update

It is finally here! After over a year of notices of violation, court appearances, and back-and-forth negotiations, we have a ruling on our garden. We are allowed to keep it! We have come to a compromise with the Village of Williston Park to keep the plants 4ft tall and to move the small fence a foot from the public sidewalk. While the 4ft height limit is subjective, considering many modern landscaping choices have plants above 4ft tall, it is still a start. We hope that our garden, and the ruling associated with it, can encourage others to rewild a piece of their lawn too. Although it is fantastic that we were able to find a compromise, there is still work that needs to be done. Outdated and subjective weed ordinances, need to be changed to ensure that individuals who want to reduce their lawns and introduce native plants are not penalized for trying to do something good.
Thank you so much to everyone who signed and shared our petition, listened to and shared our story, gave advice, or stopped by to chat. Your support helped make keeping our pollinator garden a reality. Our court battle may be over, but our desire to make rewilding something that everyone can do is still strong. Let's work together to help native plants spread one seed at a time in our communities!
