Support the Pedestrian Zone of Asbury Park

Support the Pedestrian Zone of Asbury Park
The Issue
Introduction:
We, the undersigned, are calling upon Asbury Park's officials and decision-makers to take action towards creating a more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly environment in our city. By transforming a section of Cookman Avenue into a pedestrian zone, we can enhance the dining experience, improve walkability, and create a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.
Explanation:
Asbury Park is continually evolving into a vibrant community. In the Summer of 2021, the City had enacted a similar initiative and because of this Cookman had become a beacon of creativity, resilience, and opportunity. By designating a section of Cookman as a pedestrian zone, we aim to build on this positive momentum and further enhance the city's appeal.
Proposal:
We propose the transformation of Cookman Avenue into a pedestrian zone, allowing restaurants, cafes, and businesses to extend their operations into the street. This initiative eliminates through traffic and creates an enhanced dining experience, promotes walkability, and accelerates the vibrancy and economic opportunity of our city.
Benefits:
- Enhanced Dining Experience: By allowing restaurants to expand their seating into the street, we can create a unique and inviting atmosphere for diners to enjoy.
- Improved Walkability: Designating Cookman Avenue as a pedestrian zone will make it easier and more enjoyable for residents and visitors to explore the shops, galleries, and attractions along this iconic street.
- Reduced Traffic Congestion: Rerouting traffic around the designated pedestrian zone will not only minimize disruption but also create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians.
- Summer 2024 Implementation: We aim to implement this initiative in time for the summer of 2024, allowing residents and visitors to fully enjoy the benefits of a pedestrian-friendly main strip.
Supporting Evidence:
Similar initiatives have been successfully implemented in cities around the world and locally leading to increased foot traffic, economic vitality, and community engagement. Examples include the designation of pedestrian zones for outdoor dining in cities like New York City, Paris, and Barcelona.
Call to Action:
We urge Asbury Park's officials and decision-makers to prioritize the transformation of Cookman Avenue into a pedestrian zone. By signing this petition, you are showing your support for a more vibrant, walkable, and inclusive city.
Closing:
Thank you for joining us in advocating for positive change in Asbury Park. Together, we can create a more inviting and pedestrian-friendly community that reflects the unique character and spirit of our city. Please sign and share this petition to help us reach our goal!
