Thank you once again all you wonderful people who want to see this project happen. Keep sharing with friends and colleagues and urge them to sign. We need to show council in numbers the level of support out there. We reached a new milestone of 4000 signatures in four days and are now inching towards 5000. So where did the idea for a rail trail begin? This trail was initiated by a few local cycling enthusiasts who could see the vacant (for 35 yrs) Great Northern Line Corridor being overtaken by weeds and vermin and used as free grazing by landholders along the way. The bridges and culverts had fallen into total disrepair and the historic sidings and railway stations had ceased to function as rail infrastructure. Gradually support grew and both Armidale Regional and Glen Innes Severn councils took the project over, started detailed planning and applied for grants. The Glen Innes section from Glen Innes to Ben Lomond is fully funded and about to begin. The Armidale to Ben Lomond section will be done in two stages - Armidale to Dumaresq and then Dumaresq to Ben Lomond. Now that the Qld Govt has permanently closed the line from Stanthorpe to Wallangarra there is potential for the trail to extend all the way from Armidale to Stanthorpe which would make it by far the longest trail in Australia. We have one hurdle to overcome - we need a rescission motion on 13th May to allow the project to proceed. Once started there will be no stopping it.
