The Issue

For 15 long years, a piece of prime city-owned land in downtown Richmond has remained vacant in the heart of Richmond, California. This chronic vacancy not only reflects the neglect and missed opportunities for our community but exacerbates the serious issues we're facing, including unsightly blight, increasing vacancies in downtown and rising vandalism. But there is hope.

The Macdonald Mini-Fields Project by the Richmond United Soccer Club proposes to transform this unused land into a vibrant and dynamic space by developing temporary soccer fields in time for the FIFA World Cup. Soccer is a universal language of enthusiasm and teamwork. By activating this site for youth and community soccer programs, we create a central hub of activity and joy, strategically located and easily accessible by BART, Amtrak, buses, and highways. This vision aims to foster community spirit while attracting foot traffic that would undoubtedly benefit small local businesses crying out for support.

Moreover, the upcoming FIFA World Cup presents an unparalleled opportunity to put our neighborhood on the map for something positive, driving interest and investment into our community. However, time is of the essence.

The FIFA World Cup predicts $17 billion US GDP increase and total regional economic impact ranges from $480 million to $630 million.  supporting the Macdonald Mini-Fields Project, you help breathe life back into a neglected corner of our city. Let’s come together to create a legacy of positive change and investment in ourselves.

We urge you to sign this petition to support the Macdonald Mini-Fields Project and make a tangible difference in the life of our neighborhood and its people. Together, we can activate this land for the greater good and show the world our community’s potential.

We are pleased to have the support of the following Macdonald Avenue organizations and businesses: Iron Triangle Neighborhood Council, FIERCE Advocates, Hecticrew, Taqueria Salsa and Churros My Fríen and more!

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the petition with me. I want to assure you that I have read and reviewed the petition, and I appreciate the passion behind the Macdonald Mini-Fields Project. Miss Samantha Torres has actively engaged with the city on this topic, both through the MacDonald Avenue Taskforce and by presenting in front of city council. We are aware of the requests and the enthusiasm from the community. There are several factors to take into account, including our current commitment and investment of over $3 million in developing three soccer fields—a project that’s been underway for the past two years. This is a significant investment for the city, and we are dedicated to seeing it through. Additionally, we have a broader plan to continue investing in permanent soccer fields throughout Richmond. My intention is to keep focusing resources and efforts on building lasting infrastructure that can support soccer and athletic activities for years to come. Thank you again for your message and for your engagement on this important issue. Best regards, Doria Robinson
