The Issue

The Corpus Christi City Council has a pivotal opportunity to make a forward-thinking decision that will secure our community’s future water needs: the approval of the inner harbor desalination project. This project holds immense importance for our city's sustainability and long-term prosperity. With the city continuing to grow and water scarcity issues, it is crucial to diversify our water resources to ensure our citizens and future generations have access to a reliable water supply.

Desalination offers a sustainable alternative to traditional water sources, which are increasingly under threat. The inner harbor project would utilize state-of-the-art technology to convert seawater into fresh, drinkable water, significantly enhancing our region’s water security. This project not only promises a stable supply of water but also positions Corpus Christi as a leader in innovative and responsible infrastructure solutions.

Critics may argue about the potential environmental impacts, but it's important to note that the project proponents have committed to strict environmental safeguards. These measures are designed to minimize any negative effects on the local marine ecosystem, ensuring that our environmental responsibilities are met without compromising on progress.

The public's support for the desalination plant is robust and widespread. Various environmental studies and community forums have shown considerable backing from residents who recognize the critical importance of this project to the future livability and vitality of Corpus Christi. It's time we advance this project with the backing it deserves.

It’s important that as citizens we support only projects that keep the water rights and control over that water in the public domain.  The other desalination projects being considered as alternates are years away from even beginning design and will be owned by a private company that will be profiting off the rate payers including Corpus Christi if the city chooses to support those projects.

Urge our city council to act decisively in favor of water security, publicly owned water rights, and economic resilience by continuing with the inner harbor desalination project. Your signature can make a significant impact in securing a sustainable future for Corpus Christi. Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support and urge the council to make the right decision for our city's future.
