Support the implementation of a dedicated shelter program for victims of domestic violence

I experienced domestic violence abuse and on that dreadful night, I found myself struggling to find a safe haven. Despite my desperate need for refuge, I was faced with a shelter system that seemed insurmountable. The paperwork was overwhelming, and the system seemed to overlook the unique needs of someone escaping domestic violence. Like many, I was not without a home; I was fleeing a hostile environment and needed immediate safety. This personal ordeal highlighted for me the gaps in our current shelter systems, especially in a city as vast and diverse as New York.

New York City’s shelter system needs to be redesigned to specifically cater to those, like myself, who are victims of domestic violence and require immediate and specialized assistance. It's crucial that we address the unique challenges faced by these individuals who should not have to navigate intense bureaucracy and endure further trauma during their hours of crisis.

Statistics show that domestic violence affects an estimated 1 in 4 women in the United States at some point in their lifetimes. In NYC alone, thousands are impacted annually. Yet, the existing shelters often lack suitable resources and streamlined processes focused on the distinct circumstances of domestic violence victims. Instead of grouping such cases with general homelessness, there needs to be a separate program that understands and compassionately addresses these urgent needs.

I am calling for the implementation of a dedicated shelter program tailored specifically to the needs of domestic violence survivors. This program should adopt a trauma-informed approach and reduce barriers to access, such as unnecessary paperwork and delays. More resources need to be allocated to train staff specifically for dealing with domestic violence cases, providing not just shelter but emotional support and guidance to rebuild one's life.

By signing this petition, you are urging local authorities and policymakers in New York City to recognize the dire necessity for this change and take immediate action. Let us stand together to make NYC a safer place for women who have suffered from domestic violence.
