Support the Faith in Change Act for Second Chances for working Americans

The Issue

As an American mother, I've seen millions of Americans unable to feed their families because they are offered jobs, begin to work, but then fail the background check due to a past felony for non-violent drug possession. Why do we let our fellow neighbors suffer for a mistake that wasn’t violent for the rest of their lives? What if that was your family member or child?

The Faith in Change Act proposes a transformative change in how we view non-violent drug offenses in the United States. This federal bill would call for all non-violent drug possession charges to be immediately sealed after two years, following suitable rehabilitation. Such a measure would offer individuals a genuine chance to reintegrate into society, allowing them to work, support their families, and contribute to their communities.

Statistics reveal that tens of thousands of American citizens face significant barriers to employment due to past non-violent drug offenses. According to The Sentencing Project, over 77 million Americans have a criminal record, and many of these individuals face life-long economic disadvantages. For minor drug offenses, the punishment should not be a life sentence of unemployment.

Rehabilitation works. Studies indicate that two years is enough time for many individuals to turn their lives around. A non-violent drug offense, particularly those involving personal possession of small quantities, should not carry the weight of perpetual exclusion from employment opportunities.

Passing this bill would be a monumental step in addressing systematic issues within our justice system. It is time for the government to adopt policies that focus on rehabilitation rather than lifelong punishment. Let us enable a REAL fair chance for our fellow citizens to rebuild their lives, and ultimately, contribute positively to society.

Support for the Faith in Change Act is support for a future where mistakes do not define an individual's life forever. Please join me in urging lawmakers to pass this important legislation and give countless Americans the second chance they deserve. Help us move towards a more just and sustainable society.

Sign this petition to show your support for the immediate sealing of non-violent drug possession charges and to encourage legislative change. Together, we can create a future where rehabilitation leads to renewal and hope.
