Support the Continuation of Competitive Tennis at Greenwich Park Tennis Courts
The Issue
We are calling on The Royal Parks to reconsider the recent decision preventing teams at Greenwich Park Tennis Courts from entering the North Kent League.
League participation is a vital part of our tennis community. It encourages regular play, supports player development, and creates a strong sense of belonging among players and team members. Many of those affected are regular, paying players who contribute consistently to the courts. Without the opportunity to compete, there is a real risk that players will choose to leave and join other clubs where league tennis is supported.
This would not only result in a loss of players, but also a loss of the strong community that has been built at Greenwich Park Tennis Courts over many years. In addition, the overall standard of tennis at the courts would likely decline, as competitive play is a key driver of improvement and progression.
It has also become more than a team sport — it is a genuine community hub. Our matches regularly bring together players from 4 to 6 different ethnic backgrounds, spanning an age range of around 25 years. This kind of cross-generational, cross-cultural mix is rare in a casual recreational setting and is a key part of what makes these teams so special. People who might never otherwise cross paths become teammates and friends. Losing the teams would mean losing one of the few spaces where that kind of connection happens every week.
A number of players have been part of these teams for over five years, including when the courts were run privately, during which time participation in the league was never raised as an issue. It is therefore surprising that under the current management by The Royal Parks, a charity organisation, this is now a concern.
We are asking The Royal Parks to engage with players and team captains to openly discuss this decision and work towards a solution that supports both the courts and its community.
