Support the Cognitive Freedom Act |Protect Our Minds from Manipulative Technologies

The Issue

The Story Behind the Petition:

In the heart of our modern world, a silent yet profound battle rages – a battle for the sanctity of our minds, the essence of our freedom. This is a story not just of individual struggle but of a collective awakening to a phenomenon we call 'regressive overload,' unfolding in three disturbing stages, each eroding a piece of our cognitive liberty.

Stage 1: The Sugar and Obesity Epidemic 1990s - 2024

Stage 1 of regressive overload in the UK is marked by the pervasive availability of high-sugar, ultra-processed foods in supermarkets. This environment fuels sugar addiction and impairs cognitive control, leading to overconsumption and obesity. A 10% increase in ultra-processed food consumption is associated with a significant rise in obesity rates(1). The addictive nature of sugar-rich foods compromises decision-making and impulse control, exacerbating health issues like obesity and Type 2 diabetes.(2)

Stage 2: Social Media and Cognitive Overload -2000s - 2024

In the UK, there has been a notable increase in mental health issues, particularly anxiety and depression, which can be linked to cognitive overload and an inability to manage stress. Statistics indicate that 1 in 4 people in England experience a mental health problem each year, and 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem like anxiety and depression in any given week. Specifically, mixed anxiety and depression affect about 8 in 100 people, while generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is seen in 6 in 100 people.(3)

Furthermore, there has been a significant increase in the levels of anxiety over recent years. In 2022/23, an average of 37.1% of women and 29.9% of men reported high levels of anxiety, a notable increase from the figures reported between 2012 and 2015, which were 21.8% for women and 18.3% for men.(4) Additionally, in 2014, 19.7% of people in the UK aged 16 and over showed symptoms of anxiety or depression, marking a 1.5% increase from the previous year. This percentage was higher among females (22.5%) than males (16.8%).(5)

These statistics highlight the growing concern over mental health in the UK and underscore the importance of addressing factors contributing to cognitive overload and stress management to mitigate the rising rates of anxiety and depression.

Stage 3: AI-Driven Reality Distortion - 2024 -

The third stage of regressive overload involves the emerging and potentially manipulative use of advanced technologies such as AI, AR, and VR. These technologies, while innovative, have the capacity to create highly immersive experiences that can distort perceptions and manipulate experiences. This manipulation risks leading to a disconnection from actual reality and a further erosion of cognitive autonomy, as these technologies could be used for profit-driven purposes. The concern is that without proper ethical frameworks and regulations, AI, AR, and VR could be exploited to influence decision-making and beliefs, undermining individual thought and action. This stage underscores the need for careful consideration of the ethical implications of these rapidly advancing technologies.

The Cognitive Freedom Act: A Beacon of Hope

In response to these escalating challenges, the Cognitive Freedom Act was born. This Act is a comprehensive response to protect our minds from these insidious forms of manipulation. It aims to establish ethical standards for technology and food industries, ensuring that advancements in AI and related fields do not compromise our cognitive liberty and mental health.
