The Issue

The Psychologists of British Columbia for ethical care and governance, a coalition of independent psychologists and other health professionals, are sounding the alarm on the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA)'s impact on our healthcare system. We believe the HPOA is detrimental to both healthcare providers and the public, putting ethical care and governance at risk. Our deep commitment to ethical practices and the welfare of the communities we serve drives us to urge action on this critical issue.

We're calling for your support to move forward with Bills M236 and M238, which propose the repeal of the HPOA. These Bills, introduced by Anna Kindy, MLA and Health Critic, and Jordan Kealy, MLA, have already successfully passed the first reading. As the second reading approaches in October 2026, it's crucial that we galvanize support to ensure they pass this next legislative stage.

The HPOA, as it stands, poses several challenges that could compromise the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. By repealing this Act, we aim to restore autonomy and tailored governance structures within health professions, ensuring that care remains patient-centered and effective.

Repealing and replacing this Act will create an opportunity to build a modern healthcare regulatory framework that protects the public while maintaining meaningful safeguards against political interference.

We are encouraging the Minister of Health and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA's) to vote in favor of passing the second reading of these Bills. By doing so, they will be taking a stand for the integrity of healthcare systems, safeguarding public interests, and upholding the professional standards we diligently work within.

Your voice matters. Your engagement can make a difference in ensuring the healthcare system aligns with ethical practices and the people's needs it serves. Stand with us in this pivotal moment by signing the petition and joining the movement to repeal and replace the HPOA. Sign now to support a healthcare system we can all trust and rely on.
