Why This Matters

Australia is a nation that embraces innovation, yet we lag behind countries like the United States and China in adopting advanced driver-assistance systems like Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) has shown significant progress in improving road safety, reducing driver workload, and enhancing mobility. With testing already underway in Australia, including a successful demonstration of a Melbourne hook turn, it’s time for our government to support the introduction and regulatory endorsement of this technology on our roads.

I’m a Sydney resident and veteran turned corporate professional; spending lots of time on Sydney roads for work. As a father and professional, I see the potential for FSD to make our roads safer and our commutes easier. Like others, the safety of my family is paramount and introduction of this support and technology will continue to support that as my kids grow up, on these roads and learning to drive. This petition calls for clear regulatory pathways to allow Tesla FSD (Supervised) to be rolled out to Australian drivers, ensuring we stay at the forefront of automotive innovation.

The Case for Tesla FSD in Australia

• Enhanced Road Safety: Tesla’s FSD uses advanced cameras, AI, and real-time data to detect obstacles, navigate complex traffic, and reduce human error, which causes most road accidents. Studies suggest FSD can make driving significantly safer than human-controlled vehicles.
• Economic and Environmental Benefits: FSD supports efficient driving, reducing fuel consumption and traffic congestion. It paves the way for future autonomous ride-sharing services, creating jobs and boosting Australia’s economy.
• Global Leadership in Innovation: Countries like the US and China are advancing autonomous vehicle frameworks. Australia risks falling behind if we don’t act now. The National Transport Commission predicts automated vehicles could enter our market by 2026—let’s accelerate this timeline.
• Public Demand and Readiness: Thousands of Australian Tesla owners have already paid up to $10,100 for FSD capability, expecting it to be unlocked via software updates once approved. Testing in Melbourne shows FSD can handle our unique road conditions, like hook turns.

The Current Barrier

While Tesla’s Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot are legal in Australia, FSD (Supervised) awaits regulatory approval. Australian Design Rule (ADR) 90 permits advanced driver-assistance systems but requires drivers to maintain control. Tesla confirms no regulatory barriers exist for FSD (Supervised) as a Level 2+ system, yet approval is stalled. A national framework for autonomous vehicles is in development but isn’t expected until 2026–27. This delay holds back progress.

What We’re Asking

We urge the Australian Government, DITRDC, NTC, and state/territory road authorities to:

• Fast-Track Regulatory Approval: Endorse Tesla FSD (Supervised) as a Level 2+ system under existing ADR 90 guidelines, allowing its immediate use with driver supervision.
• Accelerate the National Framework: Finalise the automated vehicle framework before 2026 to support FSD and future Level 3/4 autonomy.
• Support Public Trials: Expand trials of FSD on Australian roads to build public trust and refine the technology for local conditions.
• Engage with Stakeholders: Work with Tesla, road safety experts, and the public to ensure safe and swift deployment.
