Support 'Spike's Law', a petition to create regulations for 'perms' on sound stages.
The Issue
On February 6, 2024, Juan 'Spike' Osorio fell to his death from the 'perms' on Stage 3 at Radford Studio Center in Studio City, CA. He was a beloved member of the filmmaking community, and a reminder of the dangers present from working 'at height'.
As an enclosed structure, 'perms' do not usually require personnel to wear fall protection; That rule changes if one steps outside of the enclosed structure and into 'the ozone'. These general workplace safety rules do, however, assume that the structure itself is sound in design, construction, maintenance, and operational practices.
At 40-60+ feet in the air, 'perms' are thin wooden walkways that run the length of a sound stage. They need to be able to support heavy duty cable, distribution, and personnel full time. This is essential for both the people in the air, and for everyone on the floor beneath them.
If someone falls from that height, it is generally too late to help them. There is no worse feeling. So let the cry for help be heard now! We need written laws specifically for the safe design, construction, maintenance, and operational use of 'perms' on all sound stages in California, so that no one else dies at work.
There should be inspection required for the compliance of appropriate material used, and maintenance over the life of the structure.
Join me in asking Senator Maria Elena Durazo to author this bill for California, and to call it 'Spike's Law' in his memory.
Thank you!
