Support Save The Books Foundation and Rescue Used Books

The Issue

Every year, over 320 million books are discarded in the U.S.—many of them perfectly readable. At the same time, literacy rates continue to decline, and countless communities lack access to books.

Save The Books Foundation, founded by the team behind The Last Bookstore, is out there saving them. With a proven infrastructure to intercept hundreds of thousands of discarded books each year, Save The Books has partnered with ReBookIt in Los Angeles to redirect them into schools, shelters, transitional housing, communities, and programs that need them most.

We’re on track to rescue over 1 million books—but scale requires partnership. That includes civic support, philanthropic funding, and corporate alignment.

It takes warehouse space.

It takes trucks, fuel, and logistics.

It takes sorting teams—our team personally sorts every book by hand.

It takes people who care about books to find out where they’ll do the most good: shelters, classrooms, transitional housing, and community spaces and beyond.

The reality is, without funding, books that educate, comfort, and inspire are simply thrown away.

We’re not running a donation bin. We’re building a national system—one that’s scalable, trackable, and deeply human.

We are asking you to join us in showing public support for literacy equity, cultural preservation, and circular reuse models.

By signing, you’re not just endorsing a nonprofit. You’re backing a movement to:

  • Reduce book waste
  • Reinforce literacy access
  • Build scalable, sustainable systems for change

*This petition will be used to demonstrate public momentum to stakeholders, potential funders, and policymakers who can help this initiative expand internationally and is intended to show community support for literacy access, waste reduction, and nonprofit infrastructure. It does not reflect opposition to any specific party or system, and is part of a broader effort to engage constructively with public and private sector leaders.
