Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have introduced a proposal to pause the construction of new AI data centers — giving the country time to catch up with one of the fastest-growing technologies in history.

Right now, data centers are expanding rapidly across the U.S., often with little oversight. Reports show they are already driving up electricity costs, consuming vast amounts of water, and putting pressure on local communities.

This proposal is not about stopping innovation. It’s about pausing growth long enough to put safeguards in place — so AI development benefits the public, not just a handful of powerful companies.

Lawmakers themselves have acknowledged that Congress is behind in understanding and regulating AI’s impact.

We call on Congress — both the House and Senate — to support this proposal, pass a temporary moratorium on new data centers, and establish clear rules to protect communities, workers, and the environment.
