Falmouth Residents, You're probably tired of this controversy (we are!) but it's time once again to contact Falmouth's zoning board of appeals (ZBA) to urge them to support Falmouth's municipal wind turbines. On Thursday evening Sept. 10, the ZBA will consider whether to grant a necessary special permit to continue operation of Wind1. If this permit isn't granted, the wind turbine(s) may be subject to shutdown or removal. Take a moment right now to contact ZBA to express your support for clean, safe renewable energy - and revenue for the town. An email template is below. Also, please forward this message to family and friends who live in Falmouth. Thank you, Friends of Falmouth Wind www.facebook.com/FriendsofFalmouthWind - Email template - TO: falzba@falmouthmass.us CC: selectmen@falmouthmass.us, falmouthwindfriends@gmail.com Re: 62-15 Support for special permit for Wind1 Dear Falmouth Zoning Board of Appeals, I urge the board to grant a special permit for operation of the town's wind turbine Wind1. The wastewater plant, a 310 acre site, next to a four-lane highway, is a reasonable and appropriate location for both Wind1 and Wind2. Turbine setback distance to nearest homes conforms to the 2011 MA DOER model bylaw requirement of three times tip height. The town has already implemented extraordinary mitigation by curtailing the turbines at night. In 2012, MassDEP found a noise exceedance at ONE home, only late at night, when they measured four residential locations. The MassDEP data also includes far louder sounds when the turbines were OFF (despite excluding highway noise). The board will hear allegations that wind turbines somehow cause harmful impacts to nearby homes. These allegations are not supported by mainstream public health research - that's why neither the Falmouth Board of Health nor MA DPH has acted to limit turbine operation. Please review this letter sent by five local physicians to Falmouth's Board of Health: www.tinyurl.com/mdwrote In May 2013, a 2:1 majority of Falmouth voters, with a majority in every precinct, voted against funding turbine removal. The 2014 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report (LBNL-6371E) found no relationship between MA real estate values and proximity to wind turbines. The wind turbines provide tangible benefits: reduced carbon emissions, and revenue for the town. Again I urge the board to grant the special permit, and to support operation of both turbines.
